Bethel Service Area

Bethel is AVEC’s largest community and a vital hub for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. With 2,834 customers and a total generating capacity of 14.368 KW, the Bethel Power Plant plays an essential role in keeping electricity reliable for the region. AVEC also provides power to Oscarville through a tieline, extending the reach of Bethel’s power system beyond the community itself.
With a population of approximately 6,179, Bethel serves as a regional center for surrounding villages. Residents from across the Kuskokwim region travel to Bethel for healthcare, education, shopping, business, transportation and other essential services. Bethel also provides an important connection between rural communities and Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city.
Located along the Kuskokwim River, Bethel is accessible primarily by air and river transportation. Its remote location makes dependable local power generation especially important.
AVEC has 9 employees based in Bethel who operate and maintain the power plant and electrical system, helping ensure reliable service for Bethel and the surrounding region.
Bethel is more than AVEC’s largest community—it is a vital connection point for Rural Alaska.
