December 2023 Back Page – Elections for AVEC Board of Directors
Posted: December 12, 2023AVEC’s board of directors has three seats that will be vacated in April 2024. Those seats are currently held by Helena Jones from Ambler, Peter Demoski from Nulato, and Phyllis Clough from Old Harbor. All three Directors are eligible to run again.
If you or anyone you know is a member of AVEC and interested in being a director, the first step is to be nominated as a candidate. To be nominated, interested persons can send an application to the Nominating Committee for consideration or they can send in a petition signed by at least 10 current members of AVEC. Applications must be received no later than December 29, 2023, and petitions must be received no later than February 3, 2024.
After the candidates have been selected, every AVEC member is sent a mail-in ballot to vote on who shall serve on the AVEC board of directors. Ballots will be mailed in early March and must be returned and received no later than April 17, 2024. The winners will be announced at the AVEC Annual Meeting on April 18, 2024.
To be eligible to become a director, a person must: 1) be a member in good standing of the cooperative, 2) not be employed by or financially interested in a competing enterprise or a business selling electric energy or supplies to the Cooperative. Directors are elected “at-large” and represent the interests of all the members of AVEC, not just their community or region.
The nominating committee’s duty is “to nominate candidates from the widest possible geographical distribution” and prepare a slate of qualified candidates for the board vacancies. Although there may be more than one candidate from the same community, there shall not be more than one director from the same community. When the votes are counted, those with the highest number of votes will be elected. If more than one candidate is from the same village only the one with the higher votes will be elected and the next eligible candidate will be elected.
