Shungnak Power Plant Upgrade

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative received $2.3 million from Rural Utility Service funding through the High Energy Cost Grant program to upgrade the power plant in Shungnak. The major power plant overhaul was completed in 2020, including the replacement of all three generation units and installation of automated switchgear. The installation will not only improve the diesel efficiency, but also makes it possible to integrate renewable energy generation.
