This Athabascan community on the Lower Yukon, between Galena and Unalakleet, traces its heritage to a time well before the Russian explorers, the Alaska Purchase and the gold rush era. Nestled at the base of the Nulato Hills the territory surrounding modern day Kaltag has long been popular for hunting and fishing camps. Even today, the subsistence life style remains a vital part of the local economy.
